Rocky star Burt Young’s career

Burt worked on a huge selection of successful TV and films. He was featured in Once Upon A Time in America, The Sopranos and Chinatown.
But he was loved for his portrayal of Paulie Pennino in the six Rocky movies.
When fans first meet Paulie on screen of the 1976 feature, he’s a foul-mouthed and angry meat packer. He’s mean to his sister Adrian, who lives with him in a small apartment, and has a go at her for not going on a date with his buddy Rocky Balboa. Paulie even destroys a turkey she has in the oven for Thanksgiving.
However, as the movies came out one by one, Paulie softened with age. He soon became some of the beloved comic relief in the flicks.
11 years later, in Rocky IV, he resets a robot the boxer give shim to a servant who dotes on him all day. But he always thinks Rocky is going to get defeated in the ring, and is surprised each time by how far he goes.
The movie won three Oscars, including Best Picture.
‘It was a great ride’
Burt opened up over the famous film franchise in an interview in 2020.
He said: “It was a great ride, and it brought me to the audience in a great way.
“I made him a rough guy with a sensitivity. He’s really a marshmallow, even though he yells a lot.”
Burt passed away on October 8 in Los Angeles, his daughter told the New York Times. No cause of death has yet been given by his family.
He was born in Queens and served in the US Marine Corps in the 1950s. It was later when his passion for acting came to light when he studied at Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio. He’s known for playing tough Italian-American characters on screen.
In his later years, he became a painter, with his artwork displayed in galleries across the globe.
